Google Brings Japan’s Tsunami Damage to Street View

Google has released a compilation of StreetView images that cover 44,000 kilometers of the region devastated by Japan’s March 11th tsunami and earthquake. Users can view before and after footage as if they were right there, standing on the streets.

The project that would capture and share these images was announced back in July and has been in progress ever since. In addition to having access to the archived StreetView in the affected areas, Google provides both a snippet at the bottom-left that tells you when the photo was taken and the option to look at what the shot looked like before the disaster.

Beyond helping “researchers and scientists who study the effects of natural disasters,” Google hopes the footage will put the event into perspective by bringing users right to the ground level of the disaster. you can view the new imagery by either visiting Google Maps for the affected regions and going into the “featured content” section, or by visiting the newly launched Memories for the Future website.

As you look at images, be certain to pay attention to the “before” and “after.” I found myself browsing open fields, wondering what the images were meant to demonstrate – until I clicked through to snapshots of what the area had looked liked previously and realized that there had once been houses, forests, and cars at these very spots.

To give an idea what sort of footage you should expect, I collected a few snapshots. Keep in mind, though, the real scope of the disaster is most clear when using the full panoramic view Google has provided – as shown in this embed:

Google has contributed to recovery and information efforts with the tsunami on several occasions before. the company quickly gave aid in the aftermath of the event by creating a crisis response page and other online resources. they then helped spread word about the difficulties the areas faced by providing updated satellite imagery of the Tsunami’s damage and custom Google Maps for the affected areas.

Please feel free to share in the comments, any imagery or co-ordinates which you find through these tools that you find to be especially powerful.

LCD 1080p HDTV – What You Should Know Before Buying

LCD 1080p HDTV What You Should Know Before Buying

When you are in the market for a new television, resolution should be one of factors you should consider. If you have the money, perhaps you should consider buying an LCD 1080p HDTV.

What is the big deal about an LCD 1080p HDTV? Well for starters, that is about 1,920×1,080 pixels which many consider as the Holy Grail of HDTV resolution. this is because it is the best that television companies have been able to come up with which is an improvement from the 720p.

The 1080p is an improvement from the 1080i. The big difference is that images are no longer in an interlaced format but rather sequentially in a single pass making it clearer for people to see the images on the screen.

Keep in mind that when you do buy an LCD 1080p HDTV, its price will be much higher than an EDTV or enhanced definition TV screen because it costs more to make. but does it really make a difference? A lot of experts in the industry say no.

This is because unless you are in the business of video editing or extreme graphic use, such features are not needed when you turn on the television to watch your favorite show or movie. second, people in Hollywood have no intentions of to produce shows using the 1080p format.

But then again, there is hope because in the battle between high definition and blu ray, the second one is sometimes the format being used when a movie is released in DVD. for this to work, you need to buy an HD DVD player since the data is encoded in 1080p.

Such information will not make you jump for joy because most broadcasts are still done using the 1080i and 720p format and there are no plans to switch to 1080p due to bandwidth issues.

Will there come a time that this will happen if such issues are resolved? probably not because it is not worth the time or the money. An independent test showed that they did not see any difference when they watched a show using this or the previous format so why even bother.

So why make it in the first place? Simply because there is competition between plasma and LCD televisions. Manufactures think that better pixel quality equals more sales but it is just one selling point and not the big picture when the consumer decides to go out and buy a new television.

In the end, what we are trying to say is that you are better off with a television either a plasma or an LCD that is 720p. If you want to intensify your viewing pleasure, use the extra dollars you save to buy a better sound system.

But if you are not watching a movie, you will need a high definition signal through an antenna, cable or satellite because nothing will appear on screen without it. You should also get the proper accessories like the box and a satellite dish to get clear signals from the network.

The LCD 1080p HDTV is only good if you plan to use it for work. Otherwise, this is something you should forget because even if you play video games with it like Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, this is made in the 720p format so there is no point even if you can make adjustments in the user settings.

Basin natives ride out quake, Irene – Vernal.com – The Vernal Express

Basin natives ride out quake, Irene Vernal.com The Vernal Express

As Hurricane Irene churned over America’s East Coast this weekend, several people from the Uintah Basin now living there prepared for the worst, only to agree it wasn’t as bad as predicted.

The Category 1 hurricane hit Cape Lookout, N.C., first and weakened to a tropical storm by the time it reached new York City and surrounding areas early Sunday morning.

“It wasn’t nearly as exciting as they made it all out to be,” said Lindsay Prokopetz, 23, who lived in Vernal in the summers of her high school years. She lives in Arlington, Va., about a half-mile from Washington, D.C., and said power was out for only two hours.

Former Duchesne resident Jesse Merkley has been living in Norwalk, Conn., and working in new York City’s Upper East side for the past 2½ years. After the storm hit early Sunday morning he said, “it wasn’t nearly as bad as everybody thought.”

Merkley, 28, said when he left new York City late Friday night all forms of public transportation were shutting down for safety. as civil engineer for a subway company, he said it was “a little eerie” to see images on the news later that night of Grand Central Station completely empty.

By Monday, subway service in the city had been partially restored, but Amtrak service was still out between Philadelphia and new York on Tuesday.

Even though the storm wasn’t as dramatic as predicted, it also wasn’t completely tame. at least 40 people had died in 11 states as of Tuesday, most of them when trees fell onto roofs or landed on cars, according to The associated Press. Vermont

Air Force Col. Dave Hardy, a 1981 Uintah High School graduate now based in Chesapeake, Va., said he spent most of Sunday driving around making sure several of his 350 Air Force co-workers were OK.

“There’s a bunch of flooding and we’ve got about 400,000 without power in the local area,” he said. “I’ve seen several trees that just look like somebody came in and smushed them with a big hand.”

Hardy said his boss had been without power for 30 hours, as of Sunday night, and was having a “massive barbecue” so that food would not spoil.

Despite the loss of power, Hardy said crews have worked quickly to remove trees from roads and houses.

“You’d be amazed how fast people clean things up,” he said. “My house is all cleaned up and most the people in my neighborhood are cleaned up.”

“On Monday, we had an earthquake,” Hardy said, citing the Aug. 22, 5.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Virginia. “So, there’s a lot of people out here who are concerned about biblical references right now.

“I think they’re just waiting for the locusts to show up,” he added with a chuckle.

LDS Church missionary Stephanie Winterton, 22, of Roosevelt, wrote to her parents last week that she’d like to “experience a small hurricane,” before her mission in Queens, N.Y., concludes in October. Her mother, Lori Winterton, said the very next day the earthquake hit in Virginia.

In an email to her parents Monday, Stephanie Winterton said there was an eerie silence Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. once the storm came though, she said she watched it from the balcony of her high-rise apartment as the rain came down in horizontal sheets.

“It was just really, really stormy,” she wrote. “Bigger than any storm I’d ever seen.”

Gala Hamilton, the mother of LDS missionary Kelsey Carter of Hanna, who is serving in Washington, D.C., said she found out Sunday that her son was OK when a member of the LDS Church there contacted her.

On Monday, her 21-year-old son sent her an email about both the earthquake and the hurricane. he said when the earthquake first hit he was sitting in his apartment chatting with other missionaries and his initial thought was, “hmmm, somebody has one stinkin’ powerful washing machine.”

In his email, Carter said once they realized it was an earthquake they were all so scared that they made it down three flights of stairs “in seven seconds.”

He said that the hurricane didn’t hit as hard as they thought, but the consistent rain led to a flooded basement for one member of the LDS Church in his area. Carter went with other missionaries to rip out carpet from that house and clear out water that was two inches deep in some spots.

Marilyn Cooper, mother of LDS missionary Bradly Cooper, who is serving in the South Carolina Columbia Mission, said Sunday she was still waiting to receive an email from him. Cooper, who is from Roosevelt, had been serving along the coast of South Carolina. his mission president told his family that all of the missionaries had been moved inland for safety, according to Marilyn Cooper.

Caitlyn Partridge, 22, of Vernal, has been working as a nanny on the East Coast since 2009. She said when the earthquake shook, the mother of her host family was working at Rockerfeller Plaza. The woman said it was a little unsettling to be in a skyscraper and feel her desk shake, according to Partridge.

In preparation for the storm, Partridge’s employer asked her to make a last-minute grocery shopping trip Friday.

“The shelves (were) completely empty of bread and water bottles,” she said.

Another Vernal native, 20-year-old Aubree Felton, who has been working as a nanny for the past three months in Norwalk, Conn., said she had put off her “normal” grocery shopping all week because she “didn’t know a big hurricane was coming.”

“It’s crazy, people are all in panic mode,” she said about her visit to the grocery store. “It was just cram-packed with people, traffic everywhere, worse than it usually is.”

The store shelves were bare of mostly soup and water, Felton said.

On Sunday, she said her employer tried to drive around town, but “he couldn’t get anywhere really, because all the roads were flooded.”

Partridge, who stayed with a friend Saturday in Bedford Hills, N.Y., said flooding wasn’t as much of an issue there Sunday, when compared to the number of downed trees. Three trees surrounding the house she was staying in went down overnight when heavy winds came and the power went out, she said.

“Our house had the most trees down,” Partridge said, adding that the trees blocked every access to and from the house.

“All of the roads are covered with branches and leaves and debris,” she said.

PR-USA.net – Emergency Planning Crucial in Disaster Recovery

1300871720 80 PR USA.net Emergency Planning Crucial in Disaster Recovery

– “All developed nations should be on standby for immediate response to limit damage and to aid recovery,” advise MENA disaster and emergency response experts

the apocalyptic images coming out of Japan following the recent earthquake and subsequent tsunami are a bitter reminder of the devastation wreaked by natural disasters. As the reported death toll rises and the threat of a nuclear disaster continues, it is impossible to predict exactly what the long-term impact on Japan’s economy will be.

however, one of those most notable facts is that experts are saying that it is only Japan’s planning and preparation for such an eventuality that has prevented the loss of life and the economic impact from being significantly worse. the same experts have noted that the Japanese earthquake was 500 times stronger than the quake that hit Haiti in January 2010, which wasn’t followed by a catastrophic tsunami, but the loss of life in Haiti was reportedly ten to twenty times higher than the death toll seems to be in Japan.

these facts highlight the critical importance of ensuring that governments and private sector organisations alike invest in putting the appropriate safeguards in place to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and man-made emergencies. In a recent interview conducted by IQPC, Ali Asad, Emergency Response Coordinator for Kuwait Oil Company and Andrew Ameen Hoar, Clinical Disaster Coordinator for the King Faizal Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia, both reiterated that planning to limit the damage before disasters occur, makes countries and organisations better positioned to recover.

Clinical Disaster Coordinator Andrew Hoar explained that “one of the biggest challenges facing emergency response practitioners is the time that it takes to mobilise the rescue forces,” which means that it becomes much harder to get the situation under control with every passing hour. He argues that all developed nations should have teams on standby for immediate response with the supplies in place needed to respond to a cross-section of likely disaster and emergency situations.

“The actual immediate requirement of the people affected,” was emphasised by Ali Asad, Emergency Response Coordinator at KOC. Without proper planning, it can be difficult to ensure that the aid received is actually appropriate – donating uncooked food and blankets to people without the means to cook that food or basic shelter is not going to be helpful.

Ali Asad also pointed out that the threats faced, the technologies available and the legislative environment are constantly evolving so it is critical that the education of the emergency practitioner is ongoing to enable them to keep up to speed with these changes. Education is at the heart of improving emergency response operations.

both experts will be speaking at the third annual Disaster Management & Crisis Response Middle East Summit next month. the Abu Dhabi event, run by a notable list of disaster and emergency response veterans, will provide a chance to review the response to natural disasters and to identify best practice strategies to improve both the readiness to deal with these situations and to improve the way in which organisations deploy effective business continuity strategies to mitigate the economic impact of such disasters.

For over thirty years, IQPC has helped the world’s leading corporations solve their business challenges through the sharing of practical industry solutions and global best practice. In the process, the company has built a formidable reputation for quality and value. the world’s most progressive companies have benefited from IQPC’s unrivalled global reach, which has connected international expertise with regional and local leaders.

A Brief History of Television

1283937311 66 A Brief History of Television

One of the most frequently asked questions related to television is, `Where`s the remote?` When the first simple television (televisores) was built in 1928, it did not come with a remote. The entire wonder consisted of a disk, a light (which tended to make the images orange in appearance) and a moderate need for electricity.

World War II slowed recreational television progress while turning that technology to the necessary military communications. many communication devices were made accessible using television cable. Unlike the Viet Nam War, civilians were not able to watch the battles that had been fought and radio was still highly sought for news and entertainment.

Technically, the ability to produce programs in color occurred in the late 1940`s, however it was in the mid 1960`s that major broadcasters began to produce their programming in color. Early colored televisions did not provide exact color replication. one often noticed unnatural tint which was correctable by manipulating the `tint` dial on the television.

For those of us old enough to remember the assignation of John F. Kennedy, we will also remember his lying in state and his funeral and burial all shown on major broadcast stations. This was the first major event in American history that could be viewed by people all across the United States on television (televisores). despite miles of separation, people in the USA felt more connected to one another because of this new technology.

The 1970`s brought about the greatest surge of television purchases. Major appliance stores (Sears and others) had banks of televisions on display. Daytime television and `Soap Operas` became favorites of many stay at home mothers. Game shows became more plentiful as did movies which introduced us to favorites such as John Waynne, Robert Young, `Beaver Cleaver` and many, many more. these were idyllic families, devoid of abuse, less than charitable language, arguments, and other behaviors evidenced in today`s homes and societies. Television commercials changed the `tools` of childhood which previously had been invented and make believe to Barbie and Ken dolls, talking bears, more sophisticated bicycles and wagons and the like.

Satellites influenced further changes in television (televisores) in the mid 1980`s. Pay for view programming became possible through the encryption of programming and transmitting via cable and only to viewers who had the additional equipment to view such programs.

Today, digital and satellite television (televisores) deliver the clearest images to the viewer and provide several hundred channels from which to choose. Televisions have grown from 6×8 picture tubes in huge cabinets to slim instruments sitting atop pedestals. Large screen television gives the appearance of football players kicking off in one`s living room and monster trucks driving directly at the viewer. Television today may be accessed from one`s computer as well as by cell phone.

I can`t imagine what I would see in a crystal ball if I were to search for changes in television technology, but I know that improvements and innovative concepts are explored daily.
