BP drags FTSE lower, Greek uncertainty weighs

LONDON | Fri Jan 27, 2012 7:50am EST

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s FTSE 100 edged down Friday, with investors disappointed by the lack of a deal on Greek debt and heavyweight BP (BP.L) hit by prospects of a bigger clean up bill for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Investors were reluctant to take on fresh bets on the index — which is still up 0.7 percent for the week and 3.6 percent since the start of the year — until Greece reaches a deal with its creditors.

Without a deal, Greece could be heading for a disorderly default, with potentially glum consequences for the euro zone — and thus for Britain, for whom the bloc is the biggest trading partner.

Euro zone finance officials voiced optimism Friday that a deal was imminent but markets — which had hoped for an agreement earlier in the week — remained a little skeptical.

“Because (a solution) hasn’t materialized it seems to be weighing down the market. the stocks that have gained have started to come off, the mining sector and the banking sector have led the way down this morning,” said Martin Dobson, head of trading at Westhouse Securities.

Miners lost 0.7 percent .FTNMX1770 after a 4 percent surge the previous session, which was fuelled by solid production reports and hopes of stronger demand from the United States.

Further clues on the health of the world’s largest economy — and thus likely demand for metals and other natural resources — will come with the release of U.S. growth figures, out at 1330 GMT.

Economists estimate GDP grew at a 3.0 percent annual pace in the October-December period, according to the median forecast in a Reuters poll. That would be a step-up from the third quarter’s 1.8 percent rate and it would be the quickest pace since the second quarter of 2010.

Defensive tobacco and pharmaceutical stocks, which tend to enjoy strong demand regardless of the macroeconomic backdrop, performed relatively well, led by Imperial Tobacco (IMT.L), the top blue-chip riser.

Comments from Citigroup helped support the cigarette maker, which rose 1.7 percent, with the bank lifting its target price on the stock to 2,570 pence from 2,550, as it repeated its “buy” rating, saying recent share price weakness has been overdone.

Technical analysts at SEB said the FTSE — which closed at 5,795.20 Thursday after briefly rising above 5,800 for the first time in six months in intraday trading — was now in a sideways trading phase.

“There are however yet no signs of weakness visible so a neutral view is still advocated,” they added. “Brave ones could try a small short position with a stop above 5,900.”

Literary Wedding Readings

 Literary Wedding Readings

To start off with, I hope that you won’t feel fooled by the somewhat nonsensical heading of this article, I just couldn’t resist to try and get a pun in there. The kind of wedding readings actually contained below is some suggested romantic reading for this summer, reading that will hopefully entertain you as well as give you some perspective in regards to your wedding planning – whether you are getting married this year, in ten years or even not at all.

With that said, on with my book recommendations for this summer.

This Charming Man by Marian Keyes

The true queen of chick-lit, Marian Keyes is at it again with a novel about how one mans marriage becomes the heartache of four women. One of the primary characters is Lola who discovers that her fantastic boyfriend, a politician named Paddy, is getting married with someone else. Heartbroken she flees Dublin and heads for the countryside.

Grace is a journalist and old friend of Paddy’s and, as she has a hard time getting over him, she wants to write about his wedding. another woman who is having great difficulty forgetting her first love Paddy is Grace twin-sister Marnie, although she ought to be happy with her existing marriage and two daughters.

Finally we have Alicia, the woman who’s honor it is to actually be marrying the desirable Paddy. as our cunning plot-maker would have it she is having mixed feelings whether he is the one or not.

Does that sound confusing at all? It probably is.

Plotting, love and drama – could you imagine something more entertaining to read at the beach this summer?

Lust for Life by Adele Parks

This story is about Bella who secretly gets married with Stevie when she is only a teenager. however, after bickering about things like paying the bills and cleaning the house, their marriage soon breaks apart. Bella left Scotland for London, where she met the wonderful Philip – and before she knew it she was married to two men at the same time. The two men not knowing that the other existed.

When her marriage to Philip is at its best and she finally has managed to leave her old life behind her, her sister happens to meet the love of her life – who of course turns out to be none other than her other husband Stevie

This suddenly makes her discover that old love never rusts.

Shopaholic ties the knot by Sophie Kinsella

Sophie Kinsella’s series about Rebecca the shopaholic has become most popular. in this book she is finally getting married to her boyfriend Luke, and naturally this is the perfect excuse for going berserk with her credit card. You only get married once being her reason.

Luke’s mother is planning a posh wedding in new York, while Rebecca’s parents are making plans for a simpler garden wedding at home in England. as Rebecka is completely unable to decide what she wants, the parallel plans continue until complete chaos is imminent.

This is the perfect, easy going book to be reading at the beach. If you also have a tendency to overspend on your shopping you will certainly be able to relate to Rebecca’s character. The book is humorous, easy to read and impossible to put down.

Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes

The Bergdorf Blondes is perhaps the ultimate chick-lit novel, written by Vogue editor Plum Sykes. She is a classical it-girl and one source of inspiration for the bitchy character Emelie in The Devil wears Prada.

The main character in the book calls herself as Moi and she spends her time shopping, getting her hair dyed in the exactly right shade of blonde, hanging with her unreliable heiress/friend and sipping champagne.

When her engagement goes up in smoke she panics, but the wedding bells are soon ringing from another direction when she realizes that the in fact are many Mr. Rights out there.

It is easy to be skeptical towards a plot like the above mentioned one, but the Bergforf Blondes is actually a charming read. before you know it you wouldn’t mind becoming a Bergforf princess yourself – slacking in bed half the day and getting lots of free clothes from from designers just in order to bee seen wearing them.

Imagine if your greatest concern in the world was that Vera Wang is offended that you wont let her design your wedding dress Granted, if Dostojevskij is your cup of tea, this book may annoy rather than entertain you.

2006 Houston Astros Predictions

 2006 Houston Astros Predictions

The Houston Astros made an incredible run to finish the 2005 regular season, stealing the Wild Card and defeating conference rival St. Louis in the playoffs on their way to the World Series. Having to win to make the playoffs got the Astros playing great baseball and gave them good momentum heading into the postseason. we saw this same effect with the Steelers this past NFL season when they had to win do or die games for over a month to make the playoffs. While other teams were coasting, such as St. Louis, Houston was playing to win.

Many analysts were saying that the Astros ran out of gas in the World Series. Realistically, they ran out of bats. They struggled to support their elite pitching staff all season long, and I don’t see big changes on the offensive end on the horizon. It really hurt this team to lose Beltran and Berkman’s numbers suffered slightly because of it as his 2005 stats were below his career averages. They don’t have a strong lineup and rely heavily on their pitching staff to pick up wins. Outside of Berkman, Morgan Ensberg is the only guy with any punch, after hitting .283 last season with 36 home runs and 101 RBIs.

The Astros have started slow the past several seasons and have caught fire down the stretch. They have especially struggled early on versus left handed pitching as they started last season winning just 4 of their first 18 against south paws and just 1 of their first 12 on the road versus lefties. It would be wise to take a look at this team in the early going to see if a similar trend develops. The pitching staff has really carried this squad the last two seasons and last year they held opponents to only a .246 opposing batting average, which was the best in the major leagues. Roy Oswalt, Andy Pettitte, and Brandon Backe form a decent top three, but they will be anxiously awaiting to see if Roger Clemens is going to make his way back into an Astros uniform. The bullpen has developed great talent over the years, with Dotel, Wagner, and now Brad Lidge. Lidge struggled in the playoffs but I’m expecting him to recover and have an impressive season after picking up 42 saves last season.

The Astros have become a fan favorite and one of those teams that people really enjoy betting on. a lot of that comes from them playing in the same division as the Cardinals and Cubs and getting a lot of quality games against ace pitchers. with that being said, you can really benefit by opening up multiple sportsbook accounts so you can keep track of where the public money is going and hit up advantageous lines. Look at the sponsors at this site and you will never be stuck with a losing sportsbook, just ones that pay when you making winning picks.
