Dwight Howard is a dominant presence in the paint. With tremendous leaping ability for a big man and his strength, Dwight often has defenders adjusting their shots or thinking twice when challenging him in the paint. As far as rebounding and blocked shots go, the T-Mobile spokesman is the best in the NBA. however, Howard’s offense is the source of much discussion.

Last year in the NBA finals against the Lakers, Howard struggled mightily with his offense yet publicly lobbied for more touches down the stretch. Stan Van Gundy knew the answer was not to dump the ball down low and let Dwight go to work. The reason is Dwight is not and never will be a polished post player. He is too robotic and rigid to even be a poor man’s Tim Duncan or Hakeem Olajuwon. Instead, his best offense is off broken plays, rebounds, and being set up.

The funny thing is the Magic brought in Patrick Ewing to tutor their young center, but Ewing was never a low post player with post moves. Ewing relied on his soft shooting touch and fadeaway jumpers to get most of his scoring. Dwight has none of that touch or fluidity to match Ewing’s game.

Howard has the beginnings of developing a running hook shot but in-game, the move is still raw and unproven. Moving forward, Howard should work heavily on developing a very short baby hook 3-5 feet out with both his hands as his go to offense when the dunk isn’t available.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 5 RBs Ready for Next Level Leap

If there’s one thing that’s been lacking in Pittsburgh, it’s been the threat of a versatile and dynamic RB. Rashard Mendenhall may have 710 yards on the year and average 3.8 yards per carry, but that only comes out to just under 60 yards per game.

Now, Pittsburgh has become more of a passing team with Ben Roethlisberger under center. However, a multi-dimensional RB such as Cincinnati’s Isaiah Pead would make them so much more dangerous.

Last season, Pead ran for over 1,000 yards and scored seven TDs. this year, he’s come onto the scene even more, with 1,110 rushing yards, 304 receiving yards on 36 receptions and 14 total TDs. 

The Steelers could certainly improve on screens and draws, and could use a reliable check-down RB in the flat or across the middle. We know Ben Roethlisberger is arguably the best at buying time, and providing him with another reliable target would only help.

That would just add another dimension to the Steelers offense, which would open up more routes deep and underneath if Pead were used to draw up LBs and CBs from the outside.

As listeners of classical music, we probably all the play the game of “What are my five or six favorite symphonies?

But if you are a famous conductor, the question might be well be: what are the Five most important Symphonies ever composed?

Well, a British conductor Sir Mark Elder (below, in a photo by Mark Allen) has written in the Guardian Newspaper about his choices as he prepares to start a broadcast series of performances on the BBC about important symphonies.

(Imagine PBS or some other network or cable TV station doing a similar project in the US. Wouldn’t that be agreeable and welcome?)

Who Will Win the Cricket World Cup 2011

Guys, it is the time to pick favorites for the Cricket World Cup 2011. the countdown for the mega event has begun, and everyone, including the legends of cricket have started picking their favorites to win the World cup. according to the legends of the game India is favorite to win the World cup.

In my opinion India is not favorite to win this World cup, even though they are top contenders for the coveted trophy. One of the main reasons for India’s unlikely success is the fact they are playing in front of the home crowd. such big events like World cup brings a lot of pressure on the players. the title of being favorites adds to already existing pressure of home crowd expectations. Indifferent form of their best one day batsman Yuvraj Singh could also harm India’s chances. Moreover their senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar will be desperate for winning this World cup in order to have at least one big trophy under his belt before he retires from cricket. you can see Sachin Tendulkar faltering or failing when approaching an important milestone. He has never featured in a World cup winning team despite featuring in five editions of the tournament. This is likely to be the last World cup for Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar is known to fail whenever there is pressure on him. any shrewd captain should be able to exploit this weakness of Sachin Tendulkar. another issue would be the spot to play Gautam Gambhir. Gautam Gambhir is better as an opener. He might not be effective in one day games in the middle order, and it could disrupt the whole batting order. There is no clear picture yet as to what combination India is likely to go. There is too much confusion with too many confusing choices. but if some of the players in the Indian batting line up hit purple patch, nothing could stop India from winning this edition of the World cup.

Australian team is not being picked as favorites this time. They are still the at the top of the ICC ranking table. Moreover reduced expectations on the Australian team might work in their favor. what could go against the Australian team is form and future of some of their key players, including their captain and star batsman Ricky Ponting. the Ashes results could also have a bearing on their performance in the upcoming World cup. the Australian team is still a force to reckon with and can peak at the right time to win the World cup.

South Africa is my favorite to win the World cup this time. They neither have the pressure of being favorites, nor they are playing in front of their home crowd. the tag of being chokers might actually work in their favor this time. Because they have been labeled chokers, it may release the any expectations on them, and may ultimately release any pressure on them. They have one of the best batting line up and best the best fast bowler in the world in their line up. South Africa should be able to open their account for World cup trophies.

The most unpredictable team ever, and the most unpredictable team in the tournament. Pakistan is not being given much of a chance by the pundits, but you should discount Pakistan at your own peril. again, less expectation from this team may eventually work in their favor. Moreover, not having to play before home crowd, yet playing home like condition may also favor them. They may not have the best team in the world on the paper, but have the team to beat any team, and have players who can change the course of the game from any situation.

England has also emerged as a very strong team in the recent past. They could repeat their success in T20 edition of the World cup in the one day version, of course with little bit of luck at crucial stages of the tournament. England also has considerably less pressure on them.

Sri Lanka is a good team, but will be under pressure playing in front of their home crowds. I do not see Sri Lanka going all the way especially without Jaysurya in their ranks at the top of the order, and indifferent form of Tilakratne Dilshan. the Sangarkara’s and Jayawardana’s are not much effective in one-day format, especially in the absence of big hitters like Jaysurya at the top. They do not have a threating bowling line up either. I do not give much chance to Sri Lanka.

New Zeeland is one team, about whom the less said the better. They have some capable cricketers, but are failing as a unit. a couple of good games at the knockout might just give them an outside chance of winning the trophy.

West Indian team of today is exactly opposite of the West Indian team that participated in the first three editions of this prestigious tournament. I do not see West Indies winning this tournament, but cricket is funny old game.

Bangladesh has the ability to upset quite a few teams in this tournament like it did to India in the previous editions. Ireland too can upset the big teams as it knocked out Pakistan in the initial stages of the tournament in the last edition of the World cup. the rest of the teams, I guess, are mere participants.

Who said we have run out of choice on the 2010 World Cup ticket? there is always a choice and many people have blindly refused to see these choices we have, even the football administrators are also guilty of this ignorance. How can we take advantage of this situation we find ourselves towards South Africa World Cup 2010 to turn our football, our sports and indeed the country at large around? The solution lies in this article.

We have to understand the situation very well. if we fail to qualify for the World Cup and heed to the call of many that we focus on the 2014 World Cup then get ready to hear the same thing in 2014, remember what happened in 2006? many fans are already thinking of cheap hotel and business opportunities to explore especially online business.

We have to be in the soccer fiesta any true fan of soccer will tell you that you only enjoy the game when there is passion attached. That is why we have Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona and several other numerous fans passionately supporting these clubs in Nigeria. Personally I was not happy watching other countries play in the 2006 WC and it will break my heart if we do not make it to the WC again. and as I said we not going to the WC is never a solution to our problems. some Nigerian players if you agree with me really deserve to be in this WC which is likely their last.

Then, if we qualify and go to the WC, are we going to display this dismal performance that we have put up in the qualifying round, I am sure many Nigerians will become hypertensive if we proceed to the WC with our present form. going by unconfirmed report that most Nigerians (especially young people) are becoming hypertensive or suffering from one heart disease or the other is a true reflection of the state of the nation called Nigeria.

So I repeat again, do we have a choice? The answer is ‘yes’. Hear me out first before you crucify me.

My verdict: sack Amodu with immediate effect and bring in a caretaker coach to play our last qualifying match. Appointing Amodu as a coach was a blunder from the beginning. The guy commits technical blunder in every match. he doesn’t know the right combination to make with the players he has. he watches a game go wrong and look on helplessly like we watching from the fan stand or the television, making no input technically at all. he just gambles, remove this put this and the game is over. Otherwise how can a coach come out criticize his players openly and even say that the opponent was more tactical and technically sound? Either he does not understand those two words or he is so so naive in coaching. did he hear what Diego Maradona said about Lionel Messi despite his poor performance in their campaign?

I keep saying it and I will say it again, we have players that can go to the World Cup and get results, what we don’t have is a team with coach who will instill discipline and character in the team and bring out the best in them, play each player in the rightful position and know which match needs which kind of player. What did Hiddinck and Ancelotti do with Chelsea FC when they took charge? was it not the same players? What is Capello doing in England and what did the England FA and even Ghana FA doing. Personally I have not seen any technically sound indigenous coach except maybe Siasia, though he has reduced his credibility by falling into a trap. let our coaches go and improve themselves, go for courses and prove themselves, we put one of them possibly Siasia under the tutelage of the foreign coach.

So, sacking Amodu is the first vital step toward 2010 WC qualification.

Once the ticket has been secured, we proceed to employ the services of a world class coach (not the low voltage category-Berti Vogts). we allow the new coach to use Angola Nations Cup for test run and quickly give us a winning team. Then set a target for him to atleast take us to the knock-out stages of the WC in South Africa 2010.

Thirdly, we Nigerian start getting involved in how things are run because whether we like it or not it will affect us. we must ensure that credible people are put on that sit come 2010 when new officials are going to be elected in NFF.

Nigerian Football Federation case is an issue for another day; we need a fast-track strategy to change things there. let us use them and qualify first.

Nigerians have been turned to mathematicians doing the permutation and combination. we hope the calculation works. The last game in Kenya will not only determine if we go to the WC, it will shape the face of our soccer in Nigeria.

What of if we don’t qualify, then we still sack him and continue with the plan but without the WC path.

We have no choice but to support our team through this fast track changes. Like it or not if we qualify, it will be difficult for you not to tune to Nigerian match in the WC. So what can we do than to join in the cause of providing solution? Call it patriotism or any thing you like, nobody can easily reject his own. we are hurt and heartbroken; that’s right but what can we do now?

Desperate situation calls for desperate actions. we have a choice to play this situation.
