CBS confirms Rome signing; wrapping up bowl ratings

As expected, Jim Rome has jumped to CBS, where he will be reunited, oddly enough, with mark Shapiro, the sometimes likable, sometimes evil programming wizard who helped launch his career at ESPN and who will merit our everlasting thanks for launching SportsCentury on ESPN and our lasting enmity for being with six Flags when the company trashed Astroworld.

But we digress. Rome’s new show, Rome, will air at 5 p.m. CST on CBS Sports Network. He also will host a new show on Showtime and will contribute to CBS Sports coverage of the NFL, NCAA basketball and U.S. Open tennis. Guess that means he can start brushing up on his Frank Caliendo impersonation, or maybe Frank can break out his Rome impersonation once more. Epic. Outstanding.

Rome’s CBSSN show will debut Tuesday, April 3. He will join CBS Sports for the NCAA Final four, and his Showtime series will debut this fall. His shows will be produced by Generate Entertainment in association with Dick Clark Productions, of which Shapiro is CEO.

The new CBS/Showtime deal has no impact on his radio association through Clear Channel and its Premiere Radio Networks syndication service.

Moving on to college football, ESPN’s ratings for the BCS championship game between Alabama and LSU were down from a year ago. the game had a 14.0 Nielsen rating with an average audience of 24.2 million viewers, down from 15.3 and 27.3 million from last year’s more competitive Auburn-Oregon game. It is, as expected with the move to cable, the lowest-rated BCS title game since it became a standalone event in 2007.

Let’s run through some numbers for Houston and the other Texas markets for the BCS final and for other bowl games of local and area interest:

BCS championship (Alabama-LSU): Houston, 16.2; Dallas-Fort Worth, 17.3; San Antonio, 14.1; Austin, 20.5. Austin ranked 10th among the 56 markets. Birmingham, big surprise, led the way at 61.2, followed by new Orleans at 53.3. Oklahoma City and Minneapolis-St. Paul were the only cities outside SEC country to make the top 10. Birmingham, interestingly enough, was down from 67.0 for Auburn-Oregon.

Sugar Bowl (Virginia Tech-Michigan): Houston, 6.5; D-FW, 5.9; San Antonio, 4.9; Austin, 9.1.

Orange Bowl (West Virginia-Clemson): Houston, 4.0; D-FW, 3.2; San Antonio, 3.5; Austin, 8.0.

Rose Bowl (Wisconsin-Oregon): Houston, 6.1; D-FW, 8.1; San Antonio, 6.1; Austin, 11.3.

Fiesta Bowl (Stanford-Oklahoma State): Houston, 10.6; D-FW, 10.8; San Antonio, 8.4; Austin, 14.8.

So here are the total ratings points for the five BCS games for the Texas markets: Houston, 43.4; D-FW, 45.3; San Antonio, 37.0; Austin, 63.7.

Moving on to other games:

TicketCity (Houston-Penn State): Houston, 4.1; D-FW, 1.9; San Antonio, 0.9; Austin, 2.1. the national rating on ESPNU was 0.9.

Meineke Car Care (Texas A&M-Northwestern): Houston, 7.1; D-FW, 4.2; San Antonio, 5.7; Austin, 6.7. the national final was 2.7.

Insight (Oklahoma-Iowa): Houston, 3.4; D-FW, 3.8; San Antonio, 2.9; Austin, 5.6.

Alamo (Baylor-Washington): Houston, 6.4; D-FW, 7.1; San Antonio, 9.1; Austin, 13.1. the national final was 4.4.

Armed Forces (BYU-Tulsa): Houston, 1.9; D-FW, 1.8; San Antonio, 1.3; Austin, 2.0.

Holiday (Texas-California): Houston, 4.6; D-FW, 5.5; San Antonio, 5.2; Austin, 20.3. the national final was 2.7.

Poinsettia (TCU-Louisiana Tech): Houston, 2.7; D-FW, 4.7; San Antonio, 2.1; Austin, 4.7. the national final was 2.1.

Compass (SMU-Pittsburgh): Houston, 1.9; D-FW, 2.5; San Antonio, 1.3; Austin, 1.9. the national final was 1.5.

Music City Bowl: MSU (6-6) vs. Wake Forest (6-6), 5:40 p.m., ESPN/ESPN3.com (Mark Jones play-by-play, Ed Cunningham analyst, Samantha Steele sideline), XM 91, Sirius 91.

NASHVILLE | Ah, game day is finally upon us. If you’ve not done so yet, see if you can get your hands on a copy of today’s Journal, where we go full bore in previewing this matchup. I’ve got stories on Chris Relf and Vick Ballard, plus Wake Forest receiver and Jackson native Chris Givens. There’s a game advance, the three keys to victory, depth charts, etc.

Pretty exhaustive coverage. and that’s not all.

In today’s sports section I have a feature on senior offensive lineman Quentin Saulsberry, who is making his 50th career start today. Hasn’t missed a game since he stepped on the field as a redshirt freshman.

Also, there’s a notebook that looks at – among other things – the matchup of MSU’s size on offense versus Wake Forest’s quickness (and lack of size) on defense.

–––––

OK. with kickoff just a few hours away, I’m going to go ahead and do the prediction thing. MSU is a seven-point favorite, but this game is a little hard to peg.

MSU has a tough, physical running game that could give Wake trouble, but then you wonder if the Deacs might give MSU trouble with that 3-4 defense predicated on speed. and the secondary isn’t bad, either.

On the other side, Tanner Price has had a pretty good year for Wake at quarterback, and he’s got some weapons to work with. State has been vulnerable against the pass this year, although it has that playmaking ability with guys like Johnthan Banks and Charles Mitchell.

My gut tells me that Wake Forest will be tough to put away, but that MSU will eventually overpower the Demon Deacons and win another bowl game under Dan Mullen.

My prediction: MSU 24, Wake Forest 13.

Sources – Chicago Bears’ Jay Cutler likely to miss rest of regular season – ESPN Chicago

Sources Chicago Bears Jay Cutler likely to miss rest of regular season ESPN Chicago

CHICAGO — Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler broke the thumb on his throwing hand during Sunday’s 31-20 win over the San Diego Chargers, according to sources familiar with the situation, and the injury likely will keep him out for the final six games of the regular season.

Mike and Mike in the Morning

ESPN NFL analyst Mike Ditka says the Bears can still be successful if quarterback Caleb Hanie doesn’t try to win games by himself. plus, Ditka has been really impressed by Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.

Cutler plans to undergo further evaluation of the injury on Monday, but the injury will require surgery that will keep him out “at least the rest of the regular season,” the sources said.

A team spokesman wouldn’t confirm Cutler’s injury.

With six games left on the schedule, the team is hopeful Cutler can return for the postseason, should the Bears advance.

Cutler completed 18 of 31 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns Sunday, and avoided a sack for just the second time in his past 30 games. according to ESPN Stats & Information, Cutler completed six of eight attempts under duress, including a third-quarter touchdown to Johnny Knox.

Under pressure, the quarterback produced a passer rating of 154.7 against the Chargers, which is interesting considering Cutler had attempted 81 passes under duress — the most in the NFL — for a passer rating of just 67.0 in the nine games headed into Sunday.

Cutler might have suffered the injury on a fourth-quarter interception to Antoine Cason on a pass intended for Knox, who slipped, essentially causing the turnover. In the attempt to make the tackle on Cason’s 64-yard return, Cutler suffered the injury.

So the news of the quarterback’s broken right thumb puts a damper on a red-hot outing that Bears coach Lovie Smith called “outstanding.”

Cutler finished the game, completing his final two passes for 24 yards in the team’s final drive.

With Cutler expected to miss time, the attention turns to backup Caleb Hanie, who will take over as the starter. A fourth-year veteran, Hanie played in two games in 2010, completing 8 of 14 passes for 66 yards and an interception.

Hanie also filled in for Cutler in the NFC title game, and hit 13-of-20 for 153 yards a touchdown and two interceptions in a loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Rookie Nathan Enderle is the only other healthy quarterback on the roster, which means there’s a good chance the Bears plan on making an acquisition at the position. It’s expected the Bears would consider quarterbacks with experience playing in the system of offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard — with no experience in Martz’s system — seemed like a logical option, but he’s just starting rehabilitation from back surgery and won’t be able to undergo any contact for at least three weeks, according to a source.

Michael C. Wright and Jeff Dickerson cover the Bears for ESPNChicago.com and ESPN 1000.

I have one slot for Hines Ward or Wes Welker, who should I start this week.?

1310296518 45 I have one slot for Hines Ward or Wes Welker, who should I start this week.?

I have Marques Colston, Laveranues Coles, Hines Ward, Wes Welker, Anthony Gonzalez. I have three slots to fill. Colston and Jennings have done great work for me recently and I really like Welker's matchup but Ward is projected to get more points.
1. Colston
2. Jennings
3. ??

I would go with Welker. NE v. the Jets…I think the Pats will put up some huge points & Welker should be a big part of that.

I understand your predicament. Brady distributes too much for you to be able to count on any of his WRs (except Moss). However, I would guess Mangenious is going to try and stop moss from beathing them. This could open up holes for Welker. I'd play Welker over Ward although Ward may very well catch a TD pass, I think Welker will be targeted more and score more points.

BTW, who projects Ward higher? Check SI.com's fantasy plus, ESPN and Yahoo for comparisons.

Welker scored against the Jets in Week 1, and that was well before he was so nicely integrated into the New England pass attack. Now Welker is a touchdown machine, and the matchup is very fantasy-friendly.

I'd start Wes Welker, he's having a career season, identical to his 2005 dolphins season. He put up some decent numbers last week and the week before, with NE playing the Jets he should completely dominate them with Moss.

Ward may put up some numbers, but not nearly as many as Welker will.

Tough call. Weather could be a major factor for both Ward and Welker on Sunday. Common sense would say Pittsburgh would be more inclined to shut it down and run the ball all day. Brady still passed for 257 yards and 2 TDs during a windstorm against the Ravens (whose defense is arguably much tougher than the Jets). Though Welker only caught 3 passes for 18 yards. He caught 6 for 61 yards and a TD against the Jets earlier this year.

Usually you would be better off with Hines Ward, since he starts and the others come off the bench (except Lav Coles, but I would avoid him with the matchup and weather this weekend). I'd go with Ward, but monitor the weather in Pittsburgh Sunday and switch to Welker if it's really bad.

I would take colston welker and ward this week.

There is no way jennings is out scoring either welker or ward.

Welker will be the go to guy in NE this week in the snow.

I have one slot for Hines Ward or Wes Welker, who should I start this week.?

New York Yankees make offer to Cliff Lee – ESPN New York

The New York Yankees are getting down to business in their pursuit of free-agent left-hander Cliff Lee.

“We have made an offer,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Wednesday evening.

A source had told ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick that Lee’s agent, Darek Braunecker, left the winter meetings Wednesday afternoon.

“[Braunecker] is flying back to Arkansas to consult with Cliff and Cliff’s wife,” Cashman said. “We’ll see. He’s got all the information he needs from us and I assume he has all the information from anyone else who has an oar in the water.

“I know we are right on the player. if he picks us, I hope he is right on us.”

Cashman said the Yankees were prepared to be patient with Lee’s decision-making process.

“This is someone who is worth the wait,” he said.

Cashman declined to offer details about the Yankees’ offer, but sources told ESPNNewYork.com and ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark that the initial offer was for six years and near $140 million — numbers that fall between the contracts for the New York Mets’ Johan Santana (6 years, $137.5 million) and the Yankees’ CC Sabathia (7 years, $161 million).

Yankee GM Brian Cashman joins 1050′s The Michael Kay show about getting the Jeter signing done, what’s new with the Cliff Lee hunt and what else the team might have in store.

The Yankees may eventually be willing to go to $25 million per season for Lee, according to a baseball official. With the Red Sox reportedly coming to terms with free-agent outfielder Carl Crawford, Lee and Braunecker have even more leverage to get to $25 million per season and possibly seven years. The Yankees have been hesitant to offer Lee seven years

Lee remains the Yankees’ no. 1 target. on Wednesday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi called him the “complete package.”

“Cliff Lee has been the prize of this offseason and we will continue to pursue him,” Girardi said.

Braunecker said Wednesday that one club is no longer involved in the Lee sweepstakes. he wouldn’t say which team had been eliminated. However, it’s not the Texas Rangers, who met with Braunecker for about 30 minutes Wednesday.

Rangers president Nolan Ryan told ESPNDallas.com on Wednesday night that the Rangers have asked Braunecker to let them know what it will take to sign Lee. Ryan expects it will take six years to sign him and the club will consider doing that. he added that he thinks he could hear something from Lee’s camp in the next 48 hours.

The Los Angeles Angels have also reached out to representatives for the free-agent left-hander, a source told Crasnick.

“We’ve had productive meetings,” said Braunecker. “They’re still in the mix.”

Earlier Wednesday, Braunecker said his group knew more than it did on Tuesday in terms of negotiations involving Lee.

“We’ve eliminated a club and have zeroed in on a few things,” Braunecker said.

The Yankees haven’t pressured Andy Pettitte in any way to make a decision if he’s going to retire or not. But they clearly would like to know his plans one way or the other. Pettitte earned $11.75 million last season.

Cashman spoke with Pettitte on Wednesday. Pettitte said he wants the Yankees to get Lee. while Pettitte didn’t indicate whether he will retire or not, Cashman thinks he will eventually return because Pettitte always has.

Cashman said there is enough money for Lee and Pettitte.

“I never have a problem knocking on [owner Hal Steinbrenner's] door and asking for money,” Cashman said. “I have a problem sometimes with Hal saying, ‘Yes.’ I know my title is general manager, but I consider myself the director of spending of the new York Yankees. I don’t make it, I spend it.”

Andrew Marchand covers the Yankees for ESPNNewYork.com. Information from ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark and Jerry Crasnick, ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Mark Saxon, ESPNDallas.com’s Richard Durrett and ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes and Joe McDonald was used in this report.
