FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate Shares 3 Lessons from 2011

2011 was a memorable year for those of us in the emergency management field — and for the many Americans impacted by disasters. Massive blizzards simultaneously blanketed dozens of states across the country. as snow melted, parts of the Midwest and upper Midwest experienced severe flooding. Texas and other states fought dangerous wildfires for months.last spring, our nation was devastated by the deadliest outbreak of tornadoes since the 1950s, with multiple instances over just a few weeks. In August, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Virginia and was felt as far as new York City — just one of the 5,017 earthquakes experienced in 2011, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. and as expected, the 2011 hurricane season didn’t give us a break. We had 19 tropical storms, the third-highest total since records began. Irene became the first hurricane to make landfall since 2008. Days later, Tropical Storm Lee proved that storms don’t have to be hurricane strength to cause significant damage. Then there are the thousands of smaller disasters that communities handled every day, out of the media glare. So as we reflect on the past year, many wonder, what lessons did we learn? First, not all disasters come with warnings — and we all need to be ready. last year, various areas of the U.S. were hit with different types of disasters. some, like the floods along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, were well forecast. others, however, came with little to no warning. and even with some events, such as Hurricane Irene, we may have had advance warning, but there wasn’t great certainty of forecast.Ultimately we all are vulnerable to these hazards. It’s very difficult to prepare for them at the last minute. if we all take away one lesson from 2011, I hope it’s that we all have a responsibility to be prepared.second, we can’t underestimate the importance of the entire team. for a long time, we’ve talked about planning for the needs of the whole community and leveraging the resources of the whole community to meet those needs. We saw it in action repeatedly — in the southeast after the tornadoes, in Joplin, Mo., in may and in Vermont after Irene. all of these response and recovery efforts engaged the entire team, including federal, state and local officials, the private sector, nonprofits, the faith-based community, volunteer groups and most importantly, the public. and it made a remarkable difference.third, 2011 further proved that we must prepare for worst-case scenarios or “maximum of maximums.” Japan’s tragic earthquake, resulting tsunami and power plant meltdown was a big wake-up call for all of us. We need to get serious about planning for incidents that involve significant loss of life, destruction of property and threats to our power grid or other infrastructure. In many ways, 2011 reinforced what we already know: Disasters can strike anytime, anywhere; it takes the entire team working together to effectively serve communities and survivors; and we must continue to plan for and test ourselves for the maximum of maximums. as we begin 2012, let’s apply those lessons and do our part to help the team by getting prepared.

Smartphone users chomping at the bit for the nextiPhone could get a taste of it by June.

The latest rumors about Apple’s flagship phone suggest that theiPhone 5 could be announced in June at Apple’s next Worldwide Developers Conference. This latest report comes from analysts at Daiwa Securities as reported by the Chinese newspaper Commercial Times.

The folks at 9to5Mac are predicting that WWDC will be held from June 10 to 15 this year.

The new scuttlebut follows a recent report from 9to5Mac also pointing to a summer release for the next iPhone. Citing a “reliable source at Foxconn in China,” the Apple blog site said that samples of the iPhone 5 are already “floating around” Apple. The new phone reportedly will sport a 4-inch or larger display, with a form factor that differs from theiPhone 4 and 4S in both length and width.

If true, it means Apple will be returning to its usual schedule of unveiling the new iPhone in June. last year marked an change of pace with the iPhone 4S not reaching the market until October.

The iPhone 5, as presumably it will be called this time around, will continue to use the current glass-to-glass touch panel technology, according to the Daiwa analysts, benefiting Apple’s touch panel suppliers, including TPK Holding and Wintek.

People who bought the iPhone 4 in June of 2010 will of course be eligible to grab the iPhone 5 this time around. but those of you who went for the iPhone 4S last October will either have to wait or break your contract to pick up Apple’s next-gen phone.

Can’t Lose Weight? It Could Be Stress

1328274908 21 Can’t Lose Weight? It Could Be Stress

People who fail to lose weight, routinely name stress as one of the greatest obstacles they face when trying to diet and eat more healthily. as a health counselor, I’ve heard it a thousand times: When I’m stressed out, I almost automatically reach for food. I can’t resist, I just need something to help me cope.

Excessive snacking and overeating are common responses to stress. When feelings of anxiety and discomfort persist, food can offer much needed relief – especially the kind we call ‘comfort food.’ Scientists believe, however, that there is more to the stress-food connection than a simple inability to stay away from the munchies.

Stress itself is not necessarily the problem. in fact, experiencing stress is a natural response without which we would not have survived as a species for long. Stress is our body’s way to protect us from danger. in emergency situations, the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol allow us to focus better, react faster and work harder than we normally would be able to. in extreme cases, stress hormones can enable us to react almost without thinking as if on autopilot, a process also known as “fight-or-flight” response, which can be a lifesaver.

But these mechanisms are only designed to deal effectively with short-term events. If the perception of danger continues unabatedly, our own natural defenses can eventually turn against us. Especially in situations where neither fight nor flight responses are possible, enduring continuously high levels of stress can cause serious damage to our physical and mental well-being in multiple ways. Over time, this can lead to a dangerous form of chronic stress, a condition so widespread and so severe, it has become one of the greatest health threats of our time.

“Stress can mean facing each day ravenously hungry, adding weight gain to [people’s] list of worries,” says Dr. Elissa Epel, a professor of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. “While the immediate response to acute stress can be a temporary loss of appetite, […] for some people, chronic stress can be tied to an increase in appetite and stress-induced weight gain. the problem,” she says, “lies within our neuroendocrine system, a brain-to-body connection that harkens to evolutionary times and which helped our distant ancestors to survive. This system still activates a series of hormones whenever we feel threatened.”

For instance, the stress hormone, cortisol, is responsible for replenishing the body with nutrients even after the stress-inducing causes have passed. as cortisol levels rise, our appetite for food increases. While the hormone itself does not make fat, chronically elevated cortisol levels can have a variety of negative health effects, including a decrease in insulin sensitivity, growing insulin resistance, reduced kidney function, hypertension and weakening of the immune system.

“The fuel our muscles need during fight or flight is sugar – one reason we crave carbohydrates when we are stressed,” says Dr. Riccardo Perfetti, an endocrinologist and director of the outpatient diabetes program at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. “To move the sugar from our blood to our muscles requires insulin, the hormone that opens the gates to the cells and lets the sugar in. And high levels of sugar and insulin set the stage for the body to store fat,” he explains.

To better control these negative effects from stress responses, experts recommend regular exercise, not only to burn calories but also to enhance the body’s production of biochemicals that can counterbalance the concentration of stress hormones.

In times of heightened stress, the worst thing people can do is “sit and stew in frustration and anger without expending any of the calories or food stores that would be used in a physical fight out of stress or danger,” says Dr. Shawn Talbott, professor in the Department of Nutrition at the University of Utah and author of “The Cortisol Connection.”

The best de-stressors are eating a balanced diet, getting sufficient amounts of sleep, taking breaks for relaxation and rejuvenation, avoiding stimulants like caffeine, tobacco and alcohol, and spending time with supportive family members and friends.

LG 42LV4400 – 42 Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV Review

1328271307 51 LG 42LV4400 42 Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV Review

LG 42LV4400 is a landmark in television technology, with superior picture quality. the television plays images in 1080p resolution which makes for fantastic viewing. Let us look at each of the aspects of the television and find out why this should be on the foremost of your decision making process when you set to buy an HDTV

Picture clarity – As mentioned before, the 1080p resolution is reason enough to have jaw dropping picture quality. however, it also depends on some channels which offer scope for 1080p like the quality satellite channels, CNN, NBC, ABC etc. others may not offer the 1080p quality but still LG 42LV4400 does a great job in providing picture quality which is better than other channels.

People who have bought the 42 inch LG 42LV4400 vouch for the amazing quality while watching DVDs. the quality is blu-ray like, provided you are watching original DVDs and you also have options to choose from which can enhance or customize the picture clarity.

On the television, you can see certain preset settings like Standard, Game, Sport, Cinema and Vivid apart from the usual settings like brightness, contrast and sharpness. you can also customize the ratio (4:3, 46:9, cinema, zoom, etc) with the options given in the menu.

LG LG 42LV4400 better than an HDTV – Compared to a standard HDTV, you will get better quality and resolution. the technology in place is TruMotion 120Hz which lets you watch high speed action, sports and thrilling effects without any blur.

Design – the hardware of the television is attractive; it is a light-weight television, slim looking and designed quite stylishly. it has a rectangular stand which can also save space. there are three HDMI inputs and a USB port. there is a cable or antenna input at the bottom, DVI and audio ports for connecting the computer, there are video inputs for audio and video and also another optical digital output. the screen also has a matte finishing which reduces chances of blurring.

What is included – you get the owner’s manual, the remote control with two AA batteries, a power cable, a cleaning cloth, one safety screw, CD and a stand with screws. the stand can permit the TV to swivel up to 20 degrees.

LG 42LV4400 is not a smart TV – it has never claimed to be one as well, so one should not expect functionalities that are not meant to be. you will not get online interactive media, digital streaming content, Web 2.0 features, and the works. but what you get is superior display, accurate colors, fantastic viewing angle and good sound.

Conclusion - One buyer summed up the image quality of this HDTV by saying, I love the contrast feature of this TV, and the black really looks black and not just a compromising charcoal gray. the 42LV4400 has features that easily topple a mid-range TV out of competition. Considering it is better than a standard HDTV, you can definitely get value for money. you can also use the TV in your office, like in a place like waiting room, lobby etc. Most other high-end televisions have features that you may not really need. For instance, some people would not really find any value in a 3D feature or can do with 2 HDMI connections, so why pay more? go for LG 42LV4400 42 Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV and make the most of your viewing pleasure.

A Review of the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf

1328267710 78 A Review of the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf

The numbers are staggering. I was blown away when I first started to research this subject.

The oil field was tapped into last September. Estimates say that it holds at least 3 billion barrels of, or six months’ worth of U.S. consumption. the field is almost 6 miles beneath of ocean floor and that’s on top of one mile of water.

The drilling rig cost $365 million and dug the deepest oil well ever. It is a floating marvel, the size of 2 football fields, hold a crew of 130 and cost more than a half million dollars a day to rent. those kinds of numbers are just mind blowing to me. Today, this massive vessel is upside down one mile below the sea and 11 of the crew members have not been found and assumed to have perished. the latest estimate is that 3 millions gallons of crude have been released into the sea and it is bringing back memories if the Exxon Valdez disaster.

The oil is threatening the part of the Gulf that is some of the most profitable and productive for shrimping and fishing in the world. It provides a fourth of the seafood in the U.S. the oil spill has already affected several states and if not controlled soon it could affect more. It seems that the people of new Orleans have had enough. first Katrina a few years back and now this, I wonder how much more this city can handle.

One new thing that I have learned is that hair is being collected and used to help soak up the oil. Evidently after the Exxon spill a beautician discovered that hair could be used in the clean up. It’s any and all kinds of hair, long hair, short hair curly hair, straight hair, people hair and animal hair. the hair is collected and stuffed into nylon stockings to soak up the oil. if you are interested in donating you can look up an organization called matter of trust.

What makes people want to visit Alabama?

That’s what state tourism officials are asking themselves.

“Alabama the Beautiful” is known for its agricultural background, rich history and southern hospitality.

And state tourism leaders want to build on those assets.

“Tourism is over a billion dollar industry, it employs over 160 thousand people just in the Dothan area. It employees over 37-hundred people. It brings in 216 million dollars just to the Dothan area,” said Bob Hendrix with the Dothan Area Convention & Tourism Bureau.

Every year, the state tourism department has quarterly meetings all over the state.

On Wednesday officials stopped in Dothan.

This technique not only allows them to discuss various destinations and attractions.

They also get to experience them first hand.

“There’s always new attractions, of course there’s the battleship Alabama that’s here, the Robert Trent Jones golf trail which is the number one attraction, botanical gardens is here, there’s all kind of new attractions around the whole state that are coming on strong,” said Hendrix.

Last year alone tourism was up four percent in Dothan, and around five percent in the entire state.

After the BP oil spill in 2010, the state expected tourism to take a major hit. However…

“Not only did we bounce back from the oil spill, but we actually set a new record year,” said Herb Malone with the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism.

Tourism leaders can’t stress enough the importance of tourism and economic impact it brings to the state.

“Tourism is economic development and it creates jobs. It provides tax revenue for not only city and county local governments, but also for state governments. It’s important for Alabamians to know we have those revenues coming in to education our children and provide our quality of life.

State tourism officials are still working on a website called Travel.Alabama.

Once it’s finished, folks from around the state will be able to post pictures and details about Alabama’s attractions.

They’re hoping that site will also influence people to visit.

Triathlon: Gemmell back on start line

1328253312 52 Triathlon: Gemmell back on start line

Kris Gemmell will return to top competition on Sunday for the first time since his win at the World Cup event in Auckland in November but his focus is very much on one race in April.

the new Zealand triathlete has been in a heavy training mode over the past six weeks at the Wanaka Snow Farm with the rest of the Tri NZ high performance squad as he eyes a top finish at April’s Sydney World Champs series race.

A top-eight finish there will guarantee a spot in London but, if he fails to achieve that, it will then come down to the selectors’ discretion. Andrea Hewitt is the only new Zealand triathlete guaranteed a start in London.

before all of that Gemmell, James Elvery, Debbie Tanner, Nicky Samuels and Kate McIlroy will all compete in this weekend’s fifth round of the Contact Tri Series in Kinloch, Taupo.

A number of international competitors will also race, including new Zealand-born Australian Chris McCormack.

McCormack is a three time winner of the Hawaii ironman event but has spent the past year back on the ITU circuit as he tries to book a place at the London Olympics.

He’s using Kinloch to search for more of the leg speed required to compete over the shorter distances.

the ITU Oceania sprint title and valuable ITU points are up for grabs and Gemmell is keen to be at the head of the pack in the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

“I have won the standard distance nationals five times but never won the sprint title at the elite level,” he said. “It is something I like doing and have spent a good part of my career doing this type of race in Europe racing in club competitions and I always enjoy Takapuna each year over a similar distance.

“But there is a big contingent of Australians coming over chasing those ITU points so it won’t be easy and the course at Kinloch is a tough one. Racing over this short distance hurts, too. there is no letting up from the gun with a nasty hill on the bike so I’ll be looking to force the issue there. My aim is to place as much pressure on the field as possible on the bike and come off with a bit of a lead and sort ourselves out over the 5km run.”

in the women’s race, McIlroy, Tanner, Samuels and Teresa Adam head the Kiwi contingent up against a strong Dutch team and a horde of Australians.

Tanner had issues with her running last season and has been working hard in the off season for another Olympic campaign after she finished 10th in Beijing in 2008. After some time off, it has been hard work in training towards that goal.

“For me, racing in January is a bit different,” she said. “I haven’t raced the new Zealand season in a long time as I am usually in a big base phase but, with Olympic qualifying in April in Sydney this year, I need to be fitter and faster sooner.

“We are still clocking up some big miles but I’m going into a little taper this week for Kinloch, with it being the Oceania sprint champs.

“Everything I do right now is focused towards Sydney, all these Contact sprint races and then the standard distance racing is part of a pathway to Sydney and qualifying for the Olympics. that is our last chance to qualify so that is really the goal.”

Nevada Soccer Adds 10 for 2012

1328249710 52 Nevada Soccer Adds 10 for 2012Font Size:

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada soccer team added 10 student-athletes to its 2012 roster, third-year head coach Dr. Melissa Price announced Wednesday.

“I’m thrilled to welcome the newest members of the Wolf Pack Soccer family,” coach Price said. “Our 2012 class brings talent, determination, and a winning mentality that will lead us to future success. they exemplify the term ‘student-athlete’, demonstrating excellent character on and off the field. We’re proud of this class and eager for them to join us this Fall.”

The nine student-athletes joining Nevada in the fall are: Kristi Cascio (Mill Valley, Calif.), Alyissa deRonde (Peoria, Ariz.), Kelly Gould (Everett, Wash.), Daisha Jones-Oglesby (Phoenix, Ariz.), Bria Outland (Tracy, Calif.), Kelsey Quintos (Fresno, Calif.), Lindsey Salcido (Lakewood, Calif.), Erin Saxton (Beaverton, Ore.), Bailey Torrez (Reno, Nev.), Alix Williams (Scottsdale, Ariz.)

The 2012 class features a host of players that can play either in the midfield or in the front of the Wolf Pack formation. In total, five incoming student-athletes have seen time at midfielder and forward durind their high school and club careers. The 2012 group also features one true forward, two defenders and two goalkeepers.

DeRonde is a 5-6 midfielder who played her high school soccer at Mountain Ridge High School and her club soccer for Sereno FC. she was a participant in the 2011 far West Regional finals and a 2011 far West Region League champion with the club.

“Aly is a tenacious midfielder who will provide excellent distribution, as well as a tough defending mentality,” Price said. “She has good vision and playmaking abilities which will compliment our other midfielders’ personalities.”

Gould had a stellar career both in high school play and club competition in western Washington. The Everett native lettered four years in soccer, as well as two in track and field and one in basketball at Archbishop Murphy High School. Her teams never finished lower than third in the state in soccer, and she was part of a state-championship team in 2011. she tallied a host of carrer accolades. she was an All-Cascade Conference honorable mention performer in 2009, Second-team all-conference honoree in 2010 and first-team all-conference and second-team all-state selection in 2011. Gould played her club soccer for Washington rush, who competed in the U.S. Club National Championships.

“Kelly will provide us with an attacking presence as a wing midfielder,” Price said. “She’s excellent at taking on players 1v1, finishing and creating service into the box.”

Much like many of her new found teammates, Daisha Jones-Oglesby is a player that has a chance to compete for time in both the midfield and attack for Nevada. she played both positions at Paradise Valley High School, where she earned three varsity letters each in soccer and track and field. Jones-Oglesby played her club soccer for SC Del Sol, the No. 1 ranked team in Arizona and 23rd Nationally.

“Daisha has a great attacking personality and likes to create things for herself and others,” Price said. “I expect her to be involved in many of our goal scoring opportunities.”

A standout performer, she earned four varsity letters for head coach Nate Perry. she was a part of two San Joaquin Athletic Association Championship teams, with the first coming in 2010 and second in 2011. Outland scored 15 goals and had 17 assists in 23 games during her junior season prior to commiting to the Wolf Pack, leading her team in both categories. She played her club soccer for the Pleasanton Rage. One of three incoming atudent-athletes to participate in the Olympic Development Program, she reached the State pool in 2008 and 2009.

“Bria can play forward or midfield and her speed is one of her greatest assets and will add to our dynamic attack,” Price said.

Lindsey Salcido rounds out the group of Pack newcomers to see time in the midfield.

Salcido earned four varsity letters at Los Alamitos High School. still competing in her senior season, she has started and played in every game for three and a half seasons as she prepares to come to Nevada. Team captain in her junior and senior seasons, she has been a proven leader in both high school and club play. she competed on the club circut for Legends FC and Beach FC. she was a National Champion in the under -16 and under-17 divisions with Legends FC and Played in the National Cup and Surf Cup with Beach.

“Linsday is one of the toughest midfielders I’ve seen in recent years,” Price said. She’s great in the air and will fortify our midfield defending.”

The only true forward signed by the Wolf Pack this year is an out-of-state product.

Erin Saxton earned four varsity letters at Beaverton High School, where she was named first-team all-Metro League as a senior. from a team perspective, she also won her third consecutive team golden boot in her final high school season. Saxton played her club soccer for FC Portland ’93 Navy. while with the club she was a participant in the National Final Four from 2008-10 and a four time participant in the Las Vegas Showcase. another player to qualify for the Olympic Development Team, she made the California state team on two occasions and made one appearance at an ODP regional camp.

Her high school statistics stand at 77 points, with 27 goals and 23 assists in four seasons.

“Erin is a goal scorer and we are excited to see her abilities excel at the college level,” Price said. “She’s talented, athletic and courageous – qualities that make her dangerous in and around the goal.”

The defenders in the 2012 class are Bailey Torrez and Kristi Cascio.

A local product, Torrez earned four varsity letters in soccer and one in basketball at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. she was a second-team all-Sierra League selection in her senior season. Torrez played her club soccer for Reno Black and former Nevada player Terran Hadlock. she was a team captain in her final season with the club in 2011.

“Bailey is a hard-working defender with good leadership abilities,” Price said. “She demonstrates a certain sense of pride in her defending that is contagious to those around her.”

Cascio comes to the Wolf Pack after earning three varsity letters in soccer at Marin Catholic High School. since joining the varsity squad as a sophomore, she has started every game of her career. she played her club soccer for Marin FC, captaining the team in each of the last two seasons.

“Kristi is a solid 1v1 defender who reads the game well,” Price said. “One of her greatest strengths is that she’s very good at winning balls out of the air – a rare quality in the women’s game and one that will strengthen our team defending.”

Kelsy Quintos and Alix Williams will join Nevada as goalkeepers, looking to bolster the back end of the Wolf Pack lineup.

Quintos earned four varsity letters at Central HS while competing in the Tri-River Athletic Conference. she posted 16 shutouts in her first 28 games during her senior season. Quintos is currently in her third consecutive year as a team captain. she was named a Fresno Bee All-Star in 2011 and first-team all-TRAC in 2011. she was also named second-team all-TRAC in 2009 and 2010. she played her club Soccer for the California Odyssey, where she was a Blues Cup Champion in 2010 and Surf Cup Champion in 2011.

Williams earned three varsity letters at Sunrise Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. for head coach Jason Foegal. she boasts13 career shutouts and a save percentage of .938. Williams owns the school record for saves in a game (19). she played her club soccer with Sereno SC for head coach Paul Taylor. she has also been a member of the Olympic Development Program since 2004 and was a Regional team member in 2010.

“Kelsey and Alix bring depth to our goalkeeping corps,” Price said. “Kelsey is technical with a good sense for the game. Alix is a fearless shot-stopper with a good presence. both have the potential to develop into top-notch college goalkeepers.”
