Kobayashi wants to win over Philadelphia

Takeru Kobayashi has reached a wholly unique level of stardom here in America.

It’s a kind of stardom where you might not recognize him at first sight. you might not even recognize his name right away. you could sit right next to him at a Sixers game without a clue as to who he is. but your ears will perk up when someone says the words “hot dog” or “eating contest”.

You look over and study him before you put two-and-two together and realize who you’re sitting beside. It’s “that skinny Japanese guy that eats all those hot dogs.” Before you know it, you’re shaking his hand. You’re reaching for your camera-phone. You’re asking a stranger to take your picture. and, above all, you’re really excited.

The good news is that you’re not alone with that reaction.

After taking in Wednesday night’s Sixers-Bulls game (his first NBA game ever), the Bulls’ Joakim Noah, Brian Scalabrine and former Sixer Kyle Korver all came looking to meet Kobayashi and have a picture taken with him. Kobayashi is a guy that even professional athletes want to go out of their way to meet.

What’s the appeal?

“He’s the guy that eats all the hot dogs. you know? and he’s the best there is,” says Noah.

But hot dogs aren’t the only thing the 33-year-old Kobayashi, or Kobi for short, eats. It’s quite the opposite. Although chicken wings are one of the few foods he’s never eaten competitively, he’s got his sights, and stomach, set on the $20,000 grand prize at this Friday’s SportsRadio 94 WIP Wing Bowl XX.

But Kobi wants to win more than the money on Friday, he wants to win over Philadelphia, and he has a secret plan for how to do it.

Kobayashi stormed to the forefront of the competitive eating circuit by winning the 2001 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, NY. In his very first year competing in the event, he obliterated the contest’s old record, downing 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. he nearly doubled the old record, and he did it in style: he didn’t chew the hot dogs like his competitors; he was somehow able to swallow them nearly whole. and when he started to feel full halfway through the contest, he would contort his stomach like a belly dancer and then miraculously be able to cram in another dozen or so hot dogs. The crowds ate it up.

Kobayashi would hold the Nathan’s title for another five years, and in the process become the face of the quasi-sport known as competitive eating.

Despite competing in eating events all over the world for more than a decade, he’s never competed in Wing Bowl, one of the world’s biggest eating competitions. Last year, WIP invited him to attend Wing Bowl 19 as a guest. While he didn’t compete in the wing-eating main event, he did scarf down a cheesesteak in a world record-breaking 24 seconds as part of an exhibition during a break in the action.

After watching reigning-champion Jonathan “Super” Squibb defeat five-time winner bill “El Wingador” Simmons by the narrowest of margins; 255 wings to 254, Kobi knew he had to compete in the next Wing Bowl.

“Watching the battle between those two that came down to one wing, I wanted to put myself in there to see how I’d do,” he said through his interpreter.

And just how does he think he’ll do? Kobi was hesitant to say just how many wings he wants to eat.

“That’s not really the point for me,” he said. he is only focused on eating more wings than his competitors, however many that may be.

Easier said than done, says rival eater bill “El Wingador” Simmons.

“This is a bone-in contest. I think he’ll have problems with the bones. and jaw strength has been a factor for him in the past,” El Wingador told me in a separate interview. Wingador’s personal goal? to eclipse the 300-wing mark for the first time and set a new Wing Bowl record.

When prompted for a response, Kobayashi gave a very diplomatic answer. “I understand that [Wingador] has more experience in this contest. I’m sure his technique and his jaw strength is much better than mine. I know that,” he admitted. So, if Wingador has the technique and the strength, how exactly does Kobayashi plan to win?

While he refuses to discuss the specifics of his training routine even within his own camp, Kobayashi did admit to me that eating a wing is much tougher for him than eating the hot dogs for which he’s famous. because of that, he’s developed his own method of wing-eating that he thinks will help him win. but even though a chicken wing and a hot dog couldn’t be more different, that doesn’t mean that Kobi’s unique skills don’t apply in this contest.

“I’m very good at swallowing food whole, so I’m going to use the technique I’m good at. I’m very good at saving the energy in my jaw. I envision myself winning by swallowing,” he said.

In other words, Wingador’s game plan boils down to a brute-strength, eat-as-much-as-possible-as-fast-as-possible approach, while Kobayashi plans on using the finesse that’s made him famous the world over.

When asked how he practices, he tells me he eats wings every day to try and perfect the technique he devised for quickly separating the meat from the bone.

Just how many wings does he eat in a day? “I ate 300 this morning,” he said.  “The only reason I eat 300 wings at a time is because I need to practice 300 times to find the technique,” he added.

So if he can eat 300 during practice, does that mean he can eat that many during Friday’s competition?

“I hope to eat at least 300,” he said with a smile.

He has some extra motivation to set a new record: Cherry Hill Imports has pledged to donate $10 per wing he eats to Philabundance. if Kobayashi manages to eat 300 wings, he’ll be responsible for earning $3,000 to help fight hunger in Philadelphia, a cause he’s passionate about.

In addition to the challenge of a new food, Wing Bowl appeals to Kobayashi for a reason that sets it apart from other eating competitions: the fans. Kobi is no stranger to crowds; according to police estimates, 50,000 people turned out the last time he competed in Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2007. but the intensity of the Wing Bowl crowd is what truly brought him back to compete this year.

“It’s one of the contests with the most energy, but it’s the only one with that kind of energy,” he said with a smile. “I thought the greatest thing about it was that the audience was the kind of audience that really gets the eaters in the mood to fight,” he claimed.

The elaborate entourages that accompany each contestant to the stage are among the most memorable things about the spectacle that is Wing Bowl. Kobayashi is drawn to the concept of the entourage, which he says is totally unique to the Wing Bowl.

“That’s the great thing about this contest. All athletes, all boxers, when they go into the ring, the entrance is so important. I’ve always thought that the packaging, the entertainment part of sports is really important for how you feel going into an event,” he said with a huge grin.

Some entourages are elaborate affairs, like last year’s “back to the Future” themed entourage that featured a two-door hatchback made to look like Doc Brown’s Delorean (complete with the trademark “gull-wing” doors). some are as simple as a sign carried by some scantily clad “Wingettes”.

When asked about what exactly they were doing for their entourage, Kobayashi and his translator suddenly whispered quietly to each other before calling over Kobi’s promoter; it turns out, the theme of his entourage is a closely guarded secret.

“We don’t want to say what it is, because it’s going to be a surprise. It’s going to be huge though,” said Don Povia, Kobi’s promoter. “It’s going to be really big and really fancy. It’s going to be very Philadelphia,” he teased.

It’s impossible to spend any amount of time around Kobayashi and his translator, Maggie James, without being charmed by his friendly and fun-loving personality.

“He’s like a big kid!” Maggie exclaimed after Kobi suddenly darted off mid-conversation on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center after the Sixers game. he coaxed Maggie into taking a picture of him next to a life-sized photo of Charles Barley mid-dunk, and when she counted to three (ichi, ni, san!) he leapt into the air, mimicking Sir Charles’ pose. It was so funny and spontaneous and made it totally obvious that this is a guy that is enjoying the ride he’s on.

But when the time comes to compete, Kobi says that he’s a totally different person. So different, in fact, that he finds it hard to believe it’s actually him up there. “I think of myself as another me every single time I compete. I think ‘This time, it’s the hero version of me,’” he confesses. “there are two of me. There’s regular me, and me during a competition I channel that other person that’s never there on a regular day.”

Kobi says he feels so little connection between the two personas that he’s occasionally uncomfortable when people praise him for his achievements.

“I feel like a cheater sometimes,” he says of his interactions with fans. “I think of that other me as a being that’s not really part of me. that guy always comes out and gives me something during competitions. I’m lucky. I feel like I’m stealing from that dude,” he says.

It seems like a very complicated situation but one that clearly works for the man. One thing is for certain though; if that “other” Kobayashi shows up on Friday you’d be hard pressed to bet against him.

Kobayashi is acutely aware that Philadelphia is a notoriously tough town to please when it comes to sports. He’s spent so much time in the city and had such a good time here that he’s dedicated to winning everybody over. he doesn’t want to be the villain. he doesn’t want to be the bad guy. he talks about the “Rocky” movies. he doesn’t want to be booed and thought of as an outsider, like Ivan Drago. he wants to be like Rocky. he wants to be the hero.

“I hope I don’t sound like I’m bragging. I don’t mean to brag. I hear that Philadelphia sports fans don’t like people that brag,” he said nervously at one point.

I tell him that he’s mostly right, but that it’s not really that simple. I tell him that sometimes it’s okay to brag, like Jimmy Rollins before the 2007 season. I tell him that this city likes genuine, honest people. So if he feels like bragging, I advised him that he probably should.

I also tell him that this city, above all, likes winners. It likes “the best”. that finally seems to satisfy him and puts his mind at ease. Winning is something he knows he can do and he genuinely believes he’s “the best”. I tell him that with that attitude, I think he’ll fit right in.

Parenting – 5 Strategies for Real Planned Parenthood

1328328911 71 Parenting 5 Strategies for Real Planned Parenthood

It’s not easy being a parent but it’s not rocket science either. all you have to do as parents is plan, think and discuss what actions you will take before the situations occur. even a single parent can plan their actions ahead of time. the planning you do now will reap huge rewards in the years to come.

Let me give you 5 strategies to consider before becoming a parent.

1. start Early

Start planning now, how you as parents are going to handle certain situations. Don’t wait till the baby arrives to start planning your discipline strategies. Don’t wait till your toddler is ready for school before discussing the type of education you desire for your child. But most important, don’t wait till your bundle of joy is a teenager to develop your guidelines for the teen years. Early planning will save you from many disappointments and heartaches.

2. be Consistent

As you begin to put your guidelines in to effect, you need to be consistent in your discipline applications and behavior expectations. if you or the other parent do not follow the same standards when enforcing the guidelines your child will use that against you. It is not uncommon for a child to drive a wedge between parents when parents do not agree on methods of punishment or reinforcement. So, discuss what your strategies will be and agree on your plan of action even before the baby arrives.

3. be Clear

Be very clear and direct in your communication with your child. your commands should be simple, specific and to the point. your child should not have to guess what you are trying to get them to do. After giving your child a command, have him repeat it back to you to verify that he understood. if your child didn’t understand, it’s your job to clarify it.

Likewise, it is your duty as parent to make sure your child knows your expectations. let her know exactly what you expect in areas of social behavior, education and responsibilities. Don’t assume your child knows what you expect her to do in certain situations. you need to take the time to make your expectations known to avoid confusion and misunderstandings.

4. be Willing

You must be willing to be the parent. you must be willing to be hated. you must be willing to do what is right for your child not what is easy. you must be the adult. you cannot be your child’s buddy.

It will not be easy to say no to your child because you want to be liked. It is human nature to want others to like us but you must develop the courage to stand up to your child and do what is right. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary.

5. be an Example

You must realize that your children will be watching YOU they will learn many of their habits, beliefs and ideas from you and your actions. take some time and examine your habits. are your habits worth passing on to your children? are your beliefs and ideas something you would want your children to copy?

It is your responsibility to prepare your child for life. Don’t leave your child’s success to chance. you must prepare, plan and take action to be a successful parent.

Ted Williams’ Secret to the Major League Baseball Rotational Hitting Swing – What You Need To Know

Ted Williams Secret to the Major League Baseball Rotational Hitting Swing What You Need To Know

So you want to learn the secrets of the Major League swing?

I completely understand. I wanted to learn as much as I could about the Major League swing, so I searched, and I soon found out that the great Ted Williams spilled the beans about his scientific approach to hitting a baseball, so I picked up his book, the Science of Hitting to learn more.

I soon discovered that Ted Williams was ahead of his time when he wrote his classic book, the Science of Hitting, back in 1970. What he was really onto was what is now known as, Rotational Hitting.

In fact, rotational hitting is a technique utilized by 95% of all Major League Baseball, Hall of Fame, sluggers.

I improved my players hitting mechanics and gave them the edge at the plate, and you can too

Consider this if you would. most coaches out there teach the same old stale drills, year after year. yes, their intentions are good; they’re well meaning, but doing repetition, after repetition, with the wrong mechanics just enforces sloppy, weak form. Can you see how this is true?

So instead, let’s talk about three rotational hitting secrets.

  1. Hips – The hips are what will actually create the torque that will generate power into the swing. Hips should lead the hands during the swing.
  2. Bat Plane – Ted Williams stated that, the swing is not level, and it’s not down. you need to get the bat traveling in the same plane as the pitch in order to increase your contact area.
  3. Hands – You have to make contact with your hands inside of the ball.

These three secrets are important, and they are the three movements that the greatest baseball sluggers in the game all have in common. you must keep them in mind when instructing your players, or if you’re learning the rotational hitting swing yourself.

Warning if you ignore these secrets, you risk not reaching your potential as a hitter.

Chevron under fire over size of Brazil oil spill

1328321713 31 Chevron under fire over size of Brazil oil spill

RIO DE JANEIRO – US energy giant Chevron drew fire from Brazilian officials amid conflicting accounts of the size of an oil spill at an offshore well it operated off Rio de Janeiro state.

Rio state’s Environment Secretary Carlos Minc questioned official accounts of the spill, saying the “accident must be bigger than what is being announced.”

“we are going to demand compensation for (the damage done) to birds, fish, dolphins and fishermen,” he told Globo television. “The company must be punished in an exemplary manner.”

The well, which Chevron said began leaking on November 8, is near the Frade field located some 370 kilometers (230 miles) northeast of Rio de Janeiro, in an area that is a migratory route for whales and dolphins.

The National Petroleum Agency said an overflight of the area and underwater images showed that the spill has been “substantially reduced” since Wednesday when Chevron began a cementing operation to plug the well.

The agency said the oil slick “continues to move away from shore” and estimated that it was now 11 miles (18 kilometers) long and 4.5 miles square (11.8 kilometers square), down from 63 square miles (163 square kilometers) on Tuesday.

It estimated that between 200 and 330 barrels of oil have seeped into the sea since November 8. The energy ministry, for its part, said 220 to 230 barrels of oil were seeping into the ocean daily.

©AFP/National Petroleum Agency

The National Petroleum Agency said the spill has been “substantially reduced”

Those estimates were contested by Greenpeace, which said satellite pictures showed a spill “10 times bigger,” and likely reached closer to 3,700 barrels a day.

Another environmental group, SkyTruth, said the most recent images it could obtain on November 12 show an oil slick spreading from the drilling location over an area of 2,379 square kilometers (920 square miles), with an estimated volume of 14,954 barrels of oil.

If the spill began midday on November 8, 24 hours before the group first observed it on satellite images, the spill rate would be at least 3,738 barrels per day — again more than 10 times larger than Chevron’s estimate — according to SkyTruth.

Chevron did not immediately return requests for comment.

“there is no doubt that an offense occurred. The spill results from the drilling activity,” said Fabio Scliar, head of the federal police’s environment department. “What interests me now is determining the responsibilities.”

Federal police are looking into the case.

Greenpeace said satellite pictures showed a spill “10 times bigger” than estimates

Greenpeace activists spilled black ink on the door of Chevron’s Rio office to protest the US energy giant’s drilling off the Brazilian coast.

“Chevron: your trash, our problem,” read a placard waved by an activist outside the Chevron office in central Rio.

The activists said they wanted more clarity on the cause of the spill.

They also wanted more details on Chevron plans to control the spill and reduce its impact on the biodiversity of the Rio state coast, a migration route for dolphins and various species of whales.

On Thursday, Chevron said cementing operations were underway “as part of its well plugging activities on an appraisal well located in the vicinity of the Frade field offshore Brazil.”

“there has never been any oil flow from the wellhead and current monitoring indicates oil from nearby seep lines on the ocean floor have reduced to infrequent droplets,” it added, saying it was monitoring the “substantially dissipated” oil sheen.

Greenpeace called for more “transparency” from Chevron and government agencies, saying they had provided “contradictory” information.

“The company is playing down the problem,” said Leandra Goncalves of Greenpeace, warning the oil slick could exceed 160 square kilometers (62 square miles). AFP reported.

KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffMissouri to participate in statewide earthquake drill Feb. 7

1328318110 44 KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar BluffMissouri to participate in statewide earthquake drill Feb. 7(KFVS) –

More than 390,000 Missourians are registered to participate in the state's second statewide earthquake drill on Feb. 7.

The “Great Central U.S. ShakeOut” is a nine-state regional earthquake drill.

More than 1.7 million people in the Midwest are expected to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” at the same time – 10:15 a.m.

In 2011, almost 500,000 Missourians participated in the first ShakeOut earthquake drill.

Missouri is one of nine states in the new Madrid Seismic Zone that will participate in this drill on the 200th anniversary of the largest earthquake in state history.

The Great new Madrid Earthquake happened on February 7, 1812 and devastated much of southeast Missouri.  It briefly reversed the course of the Mississippi River and was felt as far away as the East Coast.

Anyone can register for the ShakeOut at www.shakeout.org/centralus, where viewers can receive all the information needed for a successful drill.

Experts say this the best way to protect yourself during an earthquake is to drop cover, and hold on since in the U.S. the primary threat for injury or loss of life is falling debris and toppling objects, like bookcases and heavy electronics, not a structural collapse.

At exactly 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 7, Missourians and people around the central U.S. will:

  • DROP to the ground
  • take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table
  • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

The new Madrid Seismic Zone, centered in southeast Missouri, is the nation's most active earthquake zone east of the Rocky Mountains, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety. at least three of the largest earthquakes in the continental United States occurred in the region from1811-12. the largest of the quakes was centered in new Madrid and occurred on Feb. 7, 1812. the earthquakes were followed by aftershocks that continued for more than two years. More than 2,000 shocks were felt at least 180 miles away from their epicenters.

More information on the ShakeOut and earthquake preparedness is available from the State Emergency Management Agency. go to www.sema.dps.mo.gov

Concert Review: Placing Wagner In Context, With Help From Debussy and Mozart

1328310908 35 Concert Review: Placing Wagner In Context, With Help From Debussy and Mozart

Dallas Symphony Music director Jaap van Zweden pulled off a neat bit of programming in Thursday night’s concert at Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center—and, intentionally or not, gave a boost to the folks next door at the Dallas Opera with a taste of symphonic Wagner, two weeks before that company takes on Tristan und Isolde.

The great thing about the repertoire for the evening was the way it revolved around Wagner, inviting the listener to ponder that titan of romanticism in terms of what came before him—represented by Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor—and what came after—represented by Debussy’s La Mer.

The evening opened with Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, a reflective delicacy from a composer more frequently associated with expansive time frames and fevered passion. Van Zweden took an appropriately translucent view of the work, emphasizing its general serenity in a performance with the orchestra reduced, as is customary for the piece, to chamber proportions.

Thence onward to the darkest of Mozart’s large orchestral works, which was also the Mozart Concerto most well-known to Wagner and his contemporaries. Soloist David Fray and Van Zweden took a fairly romantic approach to the piece, exploring timbres and resonance (Fray particularly displayed a subtle and rich approach to pedaling) and bursting, when appropriate, into the stormy passion this work demands.

After intermission, the full orchestra assembled onstage for another Wagner excerpt, the “Good Friday Spell” from Parsifal. although this work is somewhat less frequently encountered in the concert hall than the Siegfried Idyll, its rich, quasi-religious aura (a counterpoint to the slowly smoldering eroticism of the Siegfried Idyll) emerged beautifully in the performance.

Debussy emerged on the European music scene at a time when the influence of Wagner was at its apex; while his music was very much a revolt against Wagner, it would have been impossible without Wagner’s orchestral innovation. This conundrum is evident throughout La Mer, with its brilliantly experimental colors, innovative harmonies, and constantly shifting moods. The orchestra was for the most part up to the challenges of this score, with a few rough spots and many wonderful moments.

While La Mer can be enjoyed as merely an amazing description of the sea, it can, in the hands of a great conductor, emerge as much more. and, quite often, in this performance, it did.

Your Next Global Supply Chain Shock: A Magnitude 7 Earthquake in Tokyo

1328307317 77 Your Next Global Supply Chain Shock: A Magnitude 7 Earthquake in Tokyo

The University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute predicts that there is a 70 percent chance of a magnitude 7 earthquake hitting the southern part of metro Tokyo in the next four years.

The news was a stunner even in this earthquake-prone nation—especially as the government has also been estimating that the same magnitude quake could occur, but over a thirty year time period instead.

The report sent Tokyo residents and government officials scrambling to update emergency preparedness plans. The International Atomic Energy Agency said it would help local authorities identify gaps in the country’s nuclear plants safety-check procedure. “Next four years” not surprisingly, has been trending high on Twitter ever since.

Businesses’ Been There, Done That

Japan’s business community has become well versed in the business risks an earthquake—or any natural disaster for that matter—can pose. The Japanese economy sputtered to a near halt after the March earthquake and tsunami but then recovered. it slowed again after the flooding in Thailand.

U.S. companies experienced the same roller coaster ride, of course, although some handled it better than others.

It took Intel, for example, until last month to inform shareholders that its fourth-quarter results will not match its earlier outlook, due to a global shortage of hard disk drives related to the flooding.

Apple, meanwhile, recovered fairly quickly from the slowdown.

Not that this kind of planning is so simplistic—i.e. Intel didn’t think ahead, Apple did, therefore Apple is the smarter.

Global supply chains have become so complex that one automobile line can have 5,000 suppliers. then try to factor in how many suppliers are connected to those 5,000 and you can see how easy it is for a company’s operations to become derailed for the want of one or two crucial parts somewhere down the line.

Solar Energy and Why We Need to Focus on It for Tomorrow’s Energy Needs

1328303708 40 Solar Energy and Why We Need to Focus on It for Tomorrows Energy Needs

Energy consumption is a huge problem in this day and age. Everyone is plugged into something; whether it is a computer, telephone, or even driving your car to and from work, you are consuming energy. Now, most of the time, this can have some pretty nasty results. Pollution, dwindling resources, high energy prices, destruction of habitats through drilling, oil spills that kills thousand of animals each year, you name it. no one wants to hear about that type of thing, but also, no one wants to stop living the way they are. Electricity has become a part of everyone’s lives, and it’s not going anywhere. so, where can one find a solution to the problems addressed earlier? The answer is simple. Solar energy, of course.

With solar energy, there are none of the problems that come with traditional energy sources such as coal, oil, or nuclear power. There is no digging, drilling, leaks or spills. Since nothing is being burned, air pollution goes right out the window. Solar energy is becoming a very real possibility for relieving the burden of fossil fuels. If everyone added solar panels to their roofs, emissions would take a nose dive. besides just powering our home, there are also exciting new possibilities on the way in solar-powered vehicles, as well as solar-powered chargers for everything from your cell phone to your laptop. The future is in solar power, an abundant, renewable resource. perhaps the first of its kind and it’s been staring the people of earth right in the face this entire time.

It’s very important that people begin looking more into solar power, as fossil fuels are a limited resource and could soon be a thing of the past. just as coal used to be a major power source, the danger and expense of getting it ushered in oil and nuclear power sources. Now that these too are getting to be considered too dangerous and hard to get (not to mention, expensive), people are starting to think outside the box. Imagine a world with no power? seems impossible, and that’s because it is. The human race cannot survive the way it is now without modern technologies. with no power, those are all gone. Luckily, people are investing in solar, wind, and other alternative energy sources.

Unlike some of the more traditional sources of energy, solar power comes cheap and easy. after all, solar power comes from the sun. no more paying the electric bill every month. with solar heating, you can knock down your gas bill too. Soon, you’ll be on your way to more conscientious power sources that agree with your wallet as well. so, again, what are the pros to solar energy? after initial installation of solar panels, it’s cheap and nearly (if not completely) free. It doesn’t hurt the environment by pollution or drilling. no more oil spills It’s much more abundant, because it is created using the power of the sun. The cons? Doesn’t sound like there are any.
