Even French politicians are uber conscious about their images.

The Associated Press reported French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni, are expecting, but want to keep Bruni’s pregnancy news as private as possible.

In fact, Elysee Palace (France’s White House) has yet to confirm the baby rumors, even though recent photos of Bruni are enough evidence to validate them.

AP implied Sarkozy’s political assistants are worried news of a baby will soften the president’s rough and tumble reputation. And whenever he’s asked about the pregnancy or congratulated, Sarkozy seems to take on a very stiff, hard attitude.

For example, when the leader was congratulated by a reporter at the this year’s G-8 summit in Normandy, Sarkozy curtly replied, “I congratulate you too for being Italian, which is a country we like so much in France.”

In addition, his future presidency plans could explain why the two are trying to keep everything under wraps.

“If this had happened at the beginning of his term, we would have had violins playing, photos in Paris-Match (magazine), happiness in the whole family, etc.,” said Yves Derai, publisher and co-author Carla et les Ambitieux (Carla and the Ambitious).

In addition, The Guardian reported Bruni is rather bored with pregnancy.

“Quite frankly, I can’t stand it any more. I spend most of my time either sitting down or lying down. I can’t drink or smoke any more. I’m in a hurry to get it over with,” she said, adding that the French public doesn’t care either.

While it’s basically impossible for celebrity figures in the United States to keep their babies out of the public eye, French laws declare photos of children can only be published and distributed with permission from the parents.

No news yet on whether the baby is a girl or a boy.
