I’ve never talked about this series on the blog before in depth, and considering the fourth book is almost out (eek!), I’d say it’s about damn time I did. but why just dedicate an entire post to it? How about an entire week?

So we’re doing it! Stay tuned for a week full of posts (here and elsewhere, from me and from some friends) celebrating the works of Cassandra Clare: the music, the romance, the Jace factor and more. Plus, a little something-something from Cassandra herself! I KNOW! Crazy.

It’s ok if you don’t, because for a while now, the web has proven to be a valuable, easier, and certainly cheaper source for all of your metal and news needs. Declining sales of newspapers and magazines are proof of this. however, Guardian.co.uk is reporting that classic rock and metal themed magazines have seen steady sales during the second end of 2010. for instance, Future Publishing’s Classic Rock magazine had a circulation of 67,695 in the second half of last year, only down 3.7% compared to the last quarter and 5% year to year, while stablemate Metal Hammer magazine had a circulation of 41,826. Additionally, Bauer’s Kerrang! magazine reported a 4.5% uplift in year-on-year circulation to 42,967, only falling 2.4% from the last period. Compared to NME, who declined by 16.4% in the second half of 2010, that’s considerably good news.

So what could be the explanation behind such steady sales for published magazines during a digital world? Well, one could argue that the U.K. rock magazines are giving the consumer more for the money (or pound in this case). Metal Hammer has teamed up with bands like Iron Maiden and Dimmu Borgir to provide fans with extra goodies along with the magazine, such as mouse pads and beanie hats. Classic Rock, though, has gone even further with artists like Slash and Motörhead by bundling magazines with the artists’ new album a month prior to its release. It’s hard to say whether these special fan pack editions are making fans come out in packs to pick up a copy, but it definitely provides more incentive. and for an industry (both print and music for that matter) that needs all the help in the world, that extra incentive could prove to be a helpful tool in generating more sales.

Ok, so most of my life I've been thinking that I was a Classic Rock Girl, but for some reason I BARELY figured out that the bands that I listen to ARE Classic Rock but that there are alot more out there that I don't know about. Do you people know any websites (not limewire please!) that are specially for rock and will help me discover all the Classic Rock bands? or do you all have any bands that you think I might like? thanks!

Pink Floyd is a must and my personal favorite, AC/DC with Bon Scott, the Doors, the olling Stones,the Who, Boston, rush, Lynard Skynard,the Outlaws, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Styx, Alice Cooper,CCR, Jimi Hendrix, those are personal favorites of mine hope it helps, and keep on rockin in the free world.

Anything rock that is now at least 20 years old or older. How do you like that. Imagine my surprise when I heard a 80's band on a classic rock station! Boy did I feel old.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph Ambassador Robert Loftis, the Civilian Response Corps chief, who is directly answerable to the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said he was sending teams around the region to “observe, report and monitor”.

Southern Sudan produces 480,000 barrels-a-day of oil and if an agreement on sharing the wealth is not amicably resolved with the north the country could return to the civil war that ended in 2005 after 21 years and the loss of almost two million lives.

Ambassador Loftis said the presence of his team will be able to call in “larger organisations to come in and help” to prevent bloodshed.

“If they vote for independence we will be looking for what sort of assistance we can provide to help them get it off to as good a start as they as they can. Or if the vote is for continued national unity what do you need to do to reconcile the north and the south.”

Asked if the US presence would provide a block against belligerence from the north he said: “It is hoped the presence of international observers will preclude violence or interference in referendum. there is never any guarantee on those but usually it is a help.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, warned earlier this month that the world risked “sleepwalking” into a humanitarian disaster as the referendum could lead four million southerners living in the north being forced out.

The Civilian Response Corps has a budget of $100 million and employs a core of 300 people with another 1,000 on standby for operations. It was set up in 2008 with the aim to work alongside the military to stabilise war-torn countries and rebuild nations

I recently set up another Film Reel screening (which I’ll get into with the next posting here) for Werewolf Fever. of course, I hadn’t seen the film yet! I’ve talked to director Brian Singleton a few times now and his love of movies is matched only by my own so I knew it was a safe bet that he could deliver a great film. I just received my screener of the movie yesterday and instantly sat down to watch it. I have to admit that I was still a little worried about the outcome. Had I just planned a screening for a movie that was bad? I can happily report that Werewolf Fever was a blast to watch and features some great guy-in-a-suit action and plenty of the red stuff and I don’t mean raw meat.

The flick only runs about 60 minutes minus beginning and ending credits and at least half of that time is the werewolf on a rampage, slicing and dicing his way through the employees and anyone else unlucky enough to be around the burger joint. the flick starts off a little slowly and it took me a few minutes to get into each of the characters. by the end of the film I was cheering for some and hoping for a terrible death for others. Congrats to Brian for creating people who I actually hoped would survive the werewolf encounter. I meant to ask Brian if the film was shot in sequence or not because it seems like the more the movie goes along, the more comfortable everyone got in their roles.

There'll be a lot more to worry about than nasty customers soon!

Being an indie flick, some of the performances are a little stiff to which Brian responded ‘sure, everyone goes after the acting in the indie flick!’. Ya got me there man! I wasn’t expecting breakout performances and everyone does a good job but Rich Glasgow and mark Singleton turn out my favorite parts of the film. the story is great and the dialogue is well done and the movie looks great. about 20 minutes into the movie the werewolf shows up. the delivery guy for the burger joint is attacked on his last delivery of the night and now he’s a werewolf. he returns to the burger joint and all hell breaks loose! Once the halfway mark hits for the film it’s pretty much all werewolf.

It's not like any other werewolf I've seen and I certainly wouldn't mess with it!

Easily the best part of the film is the werewolf. Forget the fancy CG crap they churn out now, which most of the time really looks awful. this werewolf is mark Singleton in a suit, and a crazy looking suit at that. there is nothing that I love more than a rubber suited monster. it doesn’t matter if it looks good or bad, I love it. it brings back fond memories of childhood, watching all those classic flicks on TV at my grandparents house on a Sunday afternoon. Nothing can beat a monster like that and the werewolf here is insane looking. He’s also hungry for blood! At first the attacks usually happen off-screen but as the movie gets closer to the end we get to watch the werewolf chowing down on unlucky victims. I was really enjoying the end result of some of those attacks!

This all leads up to an ending that I didn’t even think about but had me grinning from ear to ear. it was a great way to finish off the flick. Any fear I may have had about screening Werewolf Fever up here in Toronto is all gone now. It’s a really fun movie and I can’t wait to check it out in a crowd. of course, this isn’t only just a fun movie, it’s a fun Canadian movie with Brian coming out of Ottawa. to think that a great Canadian flick like this is only now getting a Toronto premiere makes me sad. I guess maybe there’s just too many Canadian movies getting made, isn’t that right Piers Handling. (please note grumpy sarcasm!) I can’t wait to bring this one to the Toronto Underground Cinema and I’m glad I could be a part of the whole thing. I’m also looking forward to anything a great monster freak like Brian Singleton can bring to the table after this one.
